Patricia Shanahan is the SETU Educational Support Worker specialising in autism based in the Academic Skills Centre on campus. Here ‘Pat’ as she is known to her students and academic staff gives her advice and information on her role as an advocate for students and positive outcomes of our service.
Academic Skills Centre
‘I would like to let you know a little about my role and our Academic Skill Centre (ASC) where I have the privilege of working with our students to assist them on their college journey here in SETU. My name is Pat (Patricia) Shanahan Student Coordinator and Educational Support Worker (ASD). The main cohort of my students are our students with autism who I work closely with to ensure they are seen and heard when they first arrive on campus and for as long as they need it. Students come to me if they are having a bad day and need some reassurance, or a problem has come up which needs to be fixed and if I don’t have the answer I will find someone who does. I advocate for students with academic staff until they find their feet and can do so themselves. The best advice I can give you is to disclose your disability to your lecturers it benefits you greatly in their understanding. And embrace the assistance and accommodations that are offered it will make that university journey just a little easier’.
‘ASC is a very comfortable quiet space to work or just to sit between lectures to collect your thoughts and our learning support tutors are always on hand should academic help be needed or just to have a chat. We celebrate your achievements and offer advice when achievements are not met and form a new plan going forward, but mostly how proud we are when you graduate and go into the world to a bright new future. We look forward to meeting you as you begin your journey here in the South East Technological University’.
