This is a new service launched in September 2026 to provide a quiet and relaxing lunch space for students who are autistic to meet and relax during lunch-times on campus. Check in with your ESW worker for details and access.
Background
Lunchtimes on campus can be a hectic affair. Canteens on campus (Centra and Granary restaurant) can get busy and noisy so we have developed a lunch club to provide a quiet place to relax. The lunch club is located in the sensory room twice a month for our neurodiverse students who have registered with the disability services.
The room is located by the medical centre on campus. Please see our interactive map for more details. The lunch club operates from 1-2pm on Tuesdays twice a month at present and will have a staff member from the disability office there for any queries. It operates as a drop in service so students can decide if they want to drop in and have a quiet place to have their lunch and it allows the opportunity if desired to socialise with other neurodiverse students.
How could this affect me?
Having a quieter place to go on campus at lunch times as a first year student can help you to settle in and feel part of the community. It also gives the possibility of meeting with other autistic first year students as well. It is a flexible option that occurs twice a month and is entirely up to a student if they want to engage.
We hope to extend the availability of the space in Term 2 if students engage and utilise the service.

Practical tips
Have a walk around campus to locate where the sensory room is located ahead of time (next to our medical centre). Access is via your ESW worker who will let you know the date the lunch club commences.
Or think about joining a club on campus. It is a good way to meet other students and connect.

Questions to think about
Consider why it might be good to have a quieter space to go for lunch and also whether you would like to share the space with other students who are autistic.
Consider exploring the clubs and societies page on the SETU website.
