Self-determination has been shown by research to be a strong contributing factor in success in navigating university and developing advocacy skills. Working on these skills might help a student who is autistic improve their academic outcome while on campus.

Background

The 5-Step Model
Field and Hoffman (1994) established an iterative, continuous cycle composed of five core components:
  1. Know Yourself: Understanding your personal strengths, weaknesses, needs, preferences, and the environments in which you operate.
  2. Value Yourself: Developing a positive self-concept, recognizing your rights and responsibilities, and accepting yourself.
  3. Plan: Setting achievable goals, planning actionable steps, anticipating outcomes, and visually rehearsing your path to success.
  4. Act: Communicating your needs, taking risks, accessing resources, negotiating, and persisting through challenges.
  5. Experience Outcomes and Learn: Comparing your actual outcomes to your expected outcomes, celebrating success, and learning from your experiences to adjust future plans.
