A step by step process to explain how to register with the Disability Services on the Waterford campus (with video).
Background
Registering with our services as a neurodivergent student is an easy and straight-forward confidential process. We are here to help your transition to university simple and easy. You can contact our office by phone or email ( 051 302758/ disabilityoffice.wd@setu.ie) and all our details are given on the SETU website. One you contact us we will then send you a Cognito form by email that you fill out online and upload your evidence of disability. You are then given an appointment to meet with our Disability Officer. During this Needs Assessment appointment you can discuss any concerns you may have and we encourage students to let us know what support they may have availed of in the past. This is our chance to get to know you and how you learn, what helps and what may not help. Then the supports agreed upon will be put in place to help you. These depend on the nature of your disability and any other co-existing conditions. The supports are called ‘reasonable accommodations’ and they can range from exam support, learning support, assistive technology or help from our ASD worker in our Academic Skills Centre. Your reasonable accommodations can be reviewed in future and you can contact our office at anytime for help. We do not disclose the nature of your disability -you are simply registered with our Disability Service for the process of implementing your reasonable accommodations.
How could this affect me?
Applying for your reasonable accommodations is important. It could make all the difference in your progression. It is not giving you an unfair advantage. Each student with a disability has different needs and it is important to create a fair equitable environment so that students with disabilities can participate fully with their peers and in turn this benefits all students.
